What is Traumacore?

The aesthetic I use is defined by me as "traumacore," but what does that mean exactly? Searching online, you'll find that traumacore is an "aesthetic" that cropped up on the internet in the mid 2010s, and focuses on digitally edited photographs that juxtapose cute, nostalgic, and childhood memories and elements with disturbing themes of trauma, violence, and abuse. This is often done by people to cope with their own trauma as a part of therapy. Unlike other aesthetics, traumacore is more than just an aesthetic. It is art therapy, a way to process feelings and experiences.

My artwork takes from traumacore, and evolves it. Typically, a traumacore image would be digitally created, a collage, but my work is primarily physical and traditional. Elements of cuteness and innocence are captured through the use of rabbits, which are juxtaposed with graphic imagery and text. My work takes heavily from traumacore as an "aesthetic," and as a concept.
